eBLOG  6.18.19

Just got back from the Dominican Republic and it is a beautiful country outside the urban areas. Very poor! Average income there is about $2500 DP/week. (that’s $50 dollars US) prices in stores are close to US prices, so $50 doesn’t go far there and most people have to beg or hustle to get by. Alcohol is a bit cheaper, especially local beer so everyone drinks. The amazing thing is that there is food everywhere! I decided to mainly do fruit while I was gone, although I did find the lone vegetarian restaurant in the area that actually had the vegan items marked “Vegan”. That was nice, and the 200 year old Spanish place was beautiful inside with 3 floors and courtyard gardens for the dining areas. The food was a bit pricey for me (but equal to any of the vegan restaurants here) but it was good. I tried the falafel and it was very good. For me, I was in awe when I realized everywhere I went there were trees of mangoes just overflowing and ready to drop their delicious golden treasure. They were dropping in the back courtyard of my little hostel, in the parks, overhanging fences right over the sidewalks, even in the wild, they were everywhere and totally free!!!! You would watch the kids just eating them with their teeth and hands like sweet candy. I, like a civilized person, always carried a knife with me for just this purpose. I was in mango heaven! I started to carry wipes with me because I could find them anywhere, and they do get a bit sticky 😏

I did go scuba diving several times, and took day trips to waterfalls and cenote’ pools which were magnificent. I explored the urban old city where I was staying and was fascinated by the array of buildings and structures dating back to before Columbus, and coming through hundreds of years of architectural differences which you can see the influences between the Spanish and French. The whole area is like walking through a huge museum. This is just one part of a large island, and I’m looking forward in the future to returning and doing another part. Other than the hustlers, the people are very nice and I enjoyed spending time there with them and will be going back some day.
