The Deravil Farmers Food Security Cooperative is a holistic approach to strengthening Haiti’s food systems, providing access to nutritious and safe food for vulnerable populations, and ensuring the economic security and well-being of Haitian farmers. The cooperative focuses on investing in sustainable agricultural practices, promoting resilient and equitable food systems, and investing in rural communities.

The Deravil Farmers Food Security Cooperative is driven by the belief that Haitian farmers must be at the center of agriculture and food policy, both to drive the growth of an equitable and resilient food sector, and to ensure the well-being of villages and communities. It involves strengthening food systems by diversifying the production and marketing of food and improving access to nutritious food for vulnerable populations. It also strives to increase farmers’ income and economic security by providing access to credit, financial services, and training, as well as investing in climate-smart agriculture practices and technology.

Ultimately, The Deravil Farmers Food Security Cooperative is about building a food system that is resilient to climate change, equitable, and sustainable. The cooperative helps to ensure that Haitian farmers are able to provide safe, nutritious food, as well as economic security and well-being in their communities. In Haiti, farming practices encompass a broad range of education and training disciplines.

Crop Management - Crops need to be managed well to yield optimal results. This includes the application of fertilizer, pruning, mulching, and other practices to ensure a healthy yield.

Edible Forests - Edible forests in Haiti can be created to provide a steady source of food and income for farmers.

Land Preparation - Land preparation is necessary to ensure it is suitable for sowing seeds and growing crops.

MarketPlace - Marketing is a critical component for successful farming for subsistence purposes and those hoping to make a living from their crops.

Organic/Regenerative Techniques - Organic and regenerative techniques are essential to ensure that the soil’s fertility is not depleted and that a healthy, nutritious yield is achieved.

Post-Harvest Handling- Post-harvest handling needs to be done carefully and with consideration to the product life cycle to ensure that food is not wasted while preserving its quality.

Value Addition - Value addition can add extra benefits to the products, including the processing and packaging of the product to create a marketable item.
